Week 48

cool,damp and gray

Well, it is hard to believe that one year has passed and that this is week 48 of ARTIST AT HOME AND ABROAD and that in total this is the 112 post! What a year, I can close my eyes and see the back alleys in Barcelona, a shop window in Florence, taste the beer in London, smell the coffee in Paris and hear the chanting in the temples of Tokyo. My paintings are now a conglomeration of all my experiences, real and imagined. The shapes and colours merge, melt and collide as they float in and out of my invented universe. I love the number 2013 and regardless of the turmoil in the  world  I have a wonderful feeling about the New Year and the changes it will bring. This is my last post of ARTIST AT HOME AND ABROAD. Starting January 1,2013 I am going to write a haiku and combine it with one of my photographs each day for the year 2013,hence the title 365-HAIKU.

Happy New Year!

week 47

cloudy and cool

I am a firm believer that change is a good thing so I was surprised at how upset I was to see only two stockings hanging on the mantel after the “children’s” Christmas stockings and special decorations have been mailed to their new households in Esquimalt, Saskatoon and Singapore. I realize that once again David and I are rearranging our traditions, readjusting our lives and moving along an unfamiliar path. Fortunately there is always a bit magic just around the corner…

Dear  Mikaya,

As I was searching through my jewelry box looking for a sparkly bracelet to wear while decorating the Christmas tree, I heard a cough, then a sneeze, and then a very soft whinny. Pulling out the very special, almost hidden drawer I found a small package wrapped in a soft winter white flannel pocket. Peeking inside I was astonished to see Miss Gabriela du Mont, the dappled gray rocking pony looking back at me. It had been many years ago that my little girl Vanessa had carefully tucked her away. Gabriela’s bright beaded eye twinkling at me and with the flick of her mane and a swish of her tail out she came into my hand. I remember that she loved celebrations and every Christmas would come out and carefully sniff at the decorations and touch her nose to the lights as Vanessa and her brothers Marcel and Joel decorated the Christmas tree. Taking Gabriela down stairs and showing her the decorations this year I realized that what she had always liked best was to be pinned onto Vanessa’s favourite Christmas outfit, or onto the front of her coat. Miss Gabriela du Mont LOVES adventures, nothing more fun that to go to school, ride in the car, or go for a walk to the park. I realized that it was time for Gabriela to live with a new little girl that loves adventures, parties and dressing up.

Merry Christmas

Tanta

P.S. Miss Gabriela du Mont came to Victoria in a large Christmas parcel from Edmonton Alberta many years ago and she is really excited about having another adventure in the mail.

Merry Christmas one and all.

Week 46

wet,dark and gray

My studio is brilliant with full spectrum lights, masses of quirky and colourful treasures. It is becoming my security blanket against the December dark, December obligations and December frenzy. Note to self next year just go out and socialize with friends, have a laugh and share some memories.

week 45

gray,cold and gray

The pre-Christmas time has become slippery and is falling through my hands, despite my best intentions to simplify, down size, and corral the Holiday time monster. I am drifting along with the low clouds, even with the best of intentions the blog has been shoved into the back of the closet!

week 44

Clear blue sky

Christmas lights are popping up all down the street and I have dragged out the pink trees and wrapped them in the new led lights, actually they look more like they have been strangled. The lights are such a harsh bright-blue-white  I am sure that aliens could use them to navigate through deep space to my front steps. Alas the pink trees are looking a bit like mutton dresses as lamb. If it ever stops raining I will get out my can of hot pink spray paint and tart them up for the season.

once shimmering pink

age had dulled your glowing limbs

lights out shine you now
